Lessons My Mother Taught Me

Lessons My Mother Taught Me

By Charles Shea LeMone    5/10/09

Through her every day actions my mother taught me

Lessons I am still learning as I write this poem.

She taught me to wake up with a smile

And end each day with a prayer.

I learned to dream and respect the dreams of others;

When to speak my mind and when to bite my tongue.

She knew how to laugh at a good joke

Even when it was made at her expense;

To be tough at times and compassionate at others;

To not be ashamed to weep and to face my battles, too;

That being right was less important than admitting wrongs,

And that new days bring new rewards and challenges.

Her reading books to me are part of my earliest memories,

And she made those picture book stories come alive;

The lessons and the principles grounded in wisdom,

So I would learn to use reason and logic as tools

To carry me through the trials and tribulations

She knew we all have to accept and face as part of living.

Most importantly, she encouraged me to set goals

As high as my imagination would allow me to go;

And to climb up no matter how often I was knocked down;

To forgive and to love and share and convey sweetness

And that old age and illness are no excuses to forget

To remain young at heart and embrace the love of life.

Shea, having been lucky enough to have known your mother, who treated me like a member of the family, this brought back many pleasant memories spent in her presence. It’s so great a blessing that you can “construct” words like these--capable of touching so many of us on this Mother’s Day.

That's a terrific tribute. I only know your parents through you, and I think of both of them as special people.

Like a fine vintage wine, you get better with time.  In your case, measured in weeks and days rather than years.  Could it be something in the air and water on your mountaintop?  No joke, Shea LeMone, I am proud to call you a valued friend to me and my family.

love the mother's day poem...I have the honor of being the publisher of Shea's book Corner Pride  (coming SOON)  in which there is a character based on Shea's mother... I can tell you she is all of that and more!

...and I love the detective spoof!

Thanks for the link. Loved the poem, enjoyed the rest.
you made me think - you do have that power -
and here are things my mother taught me...

"Stop, look, and listen before crossing a street.
Crying makes your face all splotchy which isn't very pretty.
You can only be hurt by what others say about you if you think they're right.
Too much of even a good thing can make you sick to your stomach.
It's hard to stay mad at anybody who has a good smile.
Never write anything down that you wouldn't want somebody to read, because sure as hell, they will.
No matter where you go or what you do, you can always come home."

Having known Shea's mother, he's absolutely right about what an inspiring woman and mother she was. I read the poem to my mother as Shea asked me to and she really liked and appreciated it.  Thank goodness we both are lucky enough to have been raised with loving, caring mothers. Shea is good at writing about his mother and where he was raised and his upcoming book should be a good read, too.

Thank all of you for taking the time to make comments about this poem. I imagine with Corner Pride so close at hand, I have been thinking about my mother and father and my sisters more than usual. Vivian and I talk sometimes for hours and my face often hurts later from laughing so much at how silly we both can be.

Once again we talked about the old neighborhood today. I pointed out that I recently told a creative writing class I learned three things growing up in a rough neighborhood that I still apply to this day. (1) How to be diplomatic to keep from getting my butt kicked too often (2) How to build bridges and bonds too keep from getting my butt kicked too often (3) How to be there for my friends in their times of need even if it means getting my butt kicked.

Having learned the same lessons herself, as well as the lessons my mother passed down to me, Vivian was able to laugh at the truth in that statement. For above all, our mother taught us to face our obstacles and not shrink from them. Yes, Edna could be bold and brave, too!

What a wonderful tribute :).  There is no love like a Mother's love.  I am so thankful and blessed I still have my Mother, she is my rock, my best friend and I love her so very much.

Love this one.  I must share it with my mom.  A good reminder for us all as we age and help our parents in their ageing the basic lessons of life.

Your Mom sounds so amazing! And you do her so much honor, I'm sure by including characters in your stories that are based so strongly on her. Happy Mother's Day, Everyone!

Our mother Edna Rose LeMone had the most loving and giving spirit of any person I know.  I truly miss her every day that God blesses me to wake up.  My brother Shea and I were very blessed to have her.
